This natty northsider has been going since 1991, but head chef and manager Neil and Jenny Magee bought it over a couple of years ago and it’s only gone up in our estimation since. The couple gave it a complete refurb but retained the split-level layout which, mad as it looks, gives the place a buzz even on quieter nights. The crowd is diverse – luvvies, foodies, tourists, hipsters pre-pub – and you’re guaranteed to have someone fascinating within five feet of your table. A good-value menu leans towards the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, with plenty of vegetarian options and a decent wine list. Always fun.

Nice food, very good service. Bit noisy, though.
