Billy Scurry, chef slash DJ, has left Gruel since our last edition – he’s now hosting brunch in the No Name Bar, among other things – but we haven’t noticed any drop in the standard of food. And only a minor drop in the standard of cool. We’ve been munching on their Roast in a Roll even more often lately, since they’ve started doing a half portion plus soup for €6.90. Early-risers can enjoy the hearty Hash – corned beef, baby spinach, potatoes and a poached egg (€8) – from 7am. The dinner menu isn’t short of age-old classics; bangers & mash with onion jam (€13) remains a perennial favourite. Caveat: uncomfortable chairs and a lack of atmosphere downstairs. And we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – the staff could smile more.

Imaginative food, good atmosphere, reasonable prices, friendly service.

Why? Because it's like going into Mamma's kitchen and being fed the best of modern Italian home-cooking ever. The mix-match crockery and furnishings only add to the charm and you never know who you'll end up being sat with on a busy Saturday night. Good times.

This is my favourite restaurant in Dublin simply because it feels like home cooked food out on the town. They have the most generous portions and the art and atmosphere are great. I thought I'd grow out of loving it after I stopped being a student, but it's an absolute must for me on every visit back to Dublin.

Hip and funky restaurant that can get really packed around lunch time. I've tried to go here more than a few times during lunch and the line was out the door. Fun, casual atmosphere and good food!
