Straight Up
Even Johnnie Fox’s, high as it is, is feeling the pinch a bit. Fred Rainert and the gang used to pack ‘em in with just the à la carte menu and, of course, their famous Hooley nights, but now they’ve had to widen the net with styled menus for each time of day – lunch specials, early bird and so on. Still, we’ve no doubt that this old legend will keep on keeping on. The food, under head chef Kilian Hoey, is good, sometimes great – but you’ll come here for a day of craic and general Oirish what-have-you. Be warned: it’s massive and busy, so can feel a bit like a culinary conveyor belt. Plus, the waiters don’t smile. Unless you really make them. The Mahi Mahi (€17.95) is excellent.
