Karma Korma
Hare Krishnas, bidi-smokers, Village readers and pretty, scarved Muslim students eat in this deli-style restaurant. Tables are sparse and the décor is basic, with pictures of venerable Indian dudes smiling down at the self-righteous. There is a simple à la carte menu and some bubbling treats from the bain-marie. Try the lunchtime special: one main course (usually a vegetarian shepherd’s pie or a vegetable bake) accompanied by two vegetable dishes, such as the rather watery dhal, paneer (Indian cheese curd) with tomato sauce or gauranga (golden baked) potatoes. To drink, have a banana lassi or homemade lemonade, safe in the knowledge that you haven’t contributed to a chain of evil on your lunch break. PS: They have sister restaurants on Aungier Street and Baggot Street – we prefer them, but political correctness demands another Northside address.
