Mid-Atlantic
Ben Gormley and Mark Harrell, a chef and an artist, have had the Mermaid for 11 years, making it an enduring symbol of the mid-90s Dublin documented in, say, About Adam. Gormley and co-chef Ian Connolly’s food is called “mid-Atlantic” – yes, that is drivel. There are always lots of fish and seafood options – the crab cakes (€10.95) are good enough to have earned a permanent spot on the menu. Last time, we ate roast John Dory with sauté potatoes. Simple and very tasty. It’s pricey enough, but if you have a few hours to wallow and people-watch, there are few finer spots in the area. What else? Fine service, popular for Sunday brunch, and a good-value lunch menu. Uncomfortable chairs!

Consistently excellent food without being overly pretentious.
