Steaks Plus
More than a steakhouse? Yes and no. The atmosphere is a little sterile in the Aungier Street home of “evolutionary food” – tables too close together, canteen vibe – but you can’t argue with the food. Standout starters include a wild mushroom risotto (€9) and scallops with confit of fennel, mizuna salad, lemon and orange dressing (€12). Among the steaks, our favourite is the succulent premium eye fillet (€29) with a choice of pepper cream or mushroom sauce, garlic butter, Béarnaise or red wine jus. A cheerful waiter will suggest side orders of onion rings, garlic mushrooms and house chips – at €4 each, they’re all winners. Separate vegetarian menu – one might have the couscous cake and stuffed red peppers (€18). The newly-opened Bald Barista across the road – "evolving with Darwin's" they say – does decent coffee and panini. For those of us all about the aesthetics, they do the prettiest cappuccino in town, with a chocolate anchor on top.
