Ranelagh has, gan dabht, the best selection of eateries of any of the suburbs but, well...it’s just so damn expensive. Everything here costs that little bit more. We love Pinocchio, but €17 for a plate of pasta? And €14 for a salad in Tribeca? We wouldn’t have thought twice last year, cos it’s all good stuff, but now, even the poshies have to mind their pennies. Enter Er Buchetto. (Well, technically it entered ages ago, but we are entering it a lot lately.) It’s tiny, but the lovely staff always manage to squeeze you in somehow. Morningtime, it’s heroin-strong Palombini coffee and pastries; lunchtime, paninis, soup and fizzy lemon drinks. (Note: closes at 5pm.) Now, when we say panini, we don’t mean those rubbery, round, doughy things – we’re talking strong bread, fresh cheeses and meats, authentic Italian accoutrements, tangy olive oil on top. They’ll happily mix and match ingredients to create your favourite – we love the caprese with heaps of artichoke added in. At €5.30 (eat in, €4.50 takeaway), it’s cheap, yes, but more importantly, it’s great value for what you’re getting. Look out for lunchtime specials, and the very popular brunch at weekeends.
