Fly back in time
Looking its age (about 200 years old), the Coachman’s Inn fits in with the surrounding motorway and airport like a sausage roll at a Bar Mitzvah. Inside, think ye olde inn. The restaurant is small – this is mostly a bar – and it offers grub for stranded tourists and travelling salesmen. The menu is a collection of bygone dishes that would make Tom Doorley weep bitter tears: deep fried brie, duo of salmon dome, prawn cocktail and so on. We had the bizarre beef and pork marengo (€16.95) – grilled beef and pork served with prawns and a fried egg in Madeira sauce – and breast of chicken Kiev-style, which reminded us of a pre-glasnost era Moscow. Desserts were just as historical, including a kitschy sherry trifle that we loved. Seriously. Cloghran, Swords, County Dublin. 840 1227
This place is an old favourite. The food isn't great and the interior could do with some re-styling but I wouldn't actually want any of this to happen. It's perfect the way it is, like your granny's house. Stop off on your way to the airport.
