Self service
We sat for half an hour coffee-less in this cute Rathborne café. We didn’t mind that much. The sun was shining. There were three beautiful women beside us. David Gray’s whiskey-induced ballads swirled around the high-ceilinged room. It was a perfect day in Dublin and we could see the Royal Canal from where we sat.
Eventually we got up and ordered from the counter. Just an iced coffee? A request too far. After leaving us standing for another five minutes before even acknowledging us, the girl behind the counter became mute/rude after we asked for it a third time.
On the way out, we spotted a sign on the door: “Dear Customer, please place your order at the counter before taking your seat and give the right table as the meal will be delivered to you on time and ensure all customers are taken care of equally.” Does that mean we have to ensure all customers are taken care of? Would they like us to wear an apron too? Ooh! They have a ‘Take a/Leave a book’ table. Loved that.
