Pretty new thing
Once a dilapidated time tunnel back to the grim 1960s Dublin, Sheries has had a makeover. Gone are the vinyl banquettes, the dodgy characters and the damp smell of stagnation. All that’s left is the original sign from outside, which has a new life behind the counter – preservation in action.
We like Sheries for breakfast, in the window or at the long diner-style bar. Staffed mostly by taciturn Chinese, it is a place to descend upon when you just don’t feel up to talking. The Light Breakfast (€6.75) isn’t going to win awards, but the coffee is strong and the eggs comforting.
Plenty of lost tourists; ditto people in recovery, on their way to or from meetings in the Dublin Central Mission, which is down the road.
Great place to stage a secret meeting or start an affair. Then again, if this is how it begins, imagine where it will end up. Not a pretty thought. Go back to your wife.
