Bordeaux in Ballsbridge
Though the Dublin 4 address is reflected in both the prices and the clientele of this little hideaway, its flexible menu means you don’t always have to commit to a big spend. The focus here is wine, French, and lots of it – bottles are stacked in every available spot.
Downstairs you can perch on high tables, choose from 150 varieties and sample the ‘amuses-gueules’. Upstairs in the Tasting Room, owners Tanya and Pierre Chapeau have also kept the menu small and extremely French.
There is a daily hot special to complement the cold meats, paté, cheeses and fish plate; the smoked duck salad (€15.80) and pan-seared foie gras (€18.95) are firm favourites.
The atmosphere will hit the spot if you need a holiday but only have one night off and fifty quid to spend. And if even that is too much of a splash, pop in late in the evening for a slice of tarte tatin and a dessert wine for less than €15. Bonnes vacances!
