Max McGuinness gives himself a plug
My play, Up The Republic!, begins a four week run at the Hill Street Theatre in Edinburgh tonight. Tickets can be purchased here or by calling the box office on 0131 226 6522. It's a a rollicking farce about multiculturalism set during a riot in a French suburb; and as if you hadn't heard enough about Nicolas Sarkozy's sex life, he's there too. Erm...it's also written in rhyming couplets. Personally, I think it should be a damn good show.
But I admit that my opinion may not be completely objective. Following our preview at London's King's Head Theatre last week, the lodestone of ex-patriot culture that is The Irish World has given us an absolute rave. They say it's "a courageous and sparkling piece of writing" and "does what modern theatre so rarely attempts -- it mixes politics, humour, and frivolity..." You can read the whole review for yourselves here.
The Anglo-American man of letters Christopher Hitchens was similarly impressed. He says the play "cleverly catches the jittery context and atmosphere that encircle the City of Light and challenge the Enlightenment itself." Standpoint magazine even seem to think Up The Republic! is part of a new wave of verse drama.
So, I hope to see you all laughing your asses off in the front row. Mention The Dubliner on the door to receive a free progamme.
